UK Charts: Fallout: New Vegas hits the jackpot

Many would have predicted this weeks No.1 game and they are all right. Bethesda's Fallout: New Vegas has indeed grabbed the top spot in its first week of release, pushing last weeks No.1 game, Medal of Honor, to No.2

EA's FIFA 11 drops another place this week to No.3, Professor Layton And The Lost Future enters at No.4 while Just Dance 2 drops 2 places to No.5.

This is followed up by 2 of Nintendo's Wii games, Wii Party & Wii Sports Resort at No.6 and No.7, it must be noted that Wii Sports Resort has spent 66 weeks in the chart and is obviously still selling well.

Codemasters' F1 game keeps sliding down slowly, this week moving down 2 places to No.8 as does Konami's Pro Evo 2011 at No.9.

Dead Rising 2 completes the top 10.

Front Mission Evolved Review

The Final Word Front Mission Evolved isn't really an evolution; it?s a passable change but feels more like several steps back for a great series. Multiplayer is short and flawed.Games are like people, they have to adapt to survive unless it?s a really strong franchise. In the case of Front Mission Evolved, that evolution to a third person in-mech and out shooter has pretty much dented the series. It?s not rubbish but it?s certainly not the game it could have been. First off we?ll do something a bit different, or I will - I?m going to talk about the multiplayer with its lag issues and vanilla design. It?s horribly busted in places since there?s not so much a balance of power as a massive abyss that rips any of the fun out of the experience if you?re going mech to mech with someone who has a better equipped Wanzer. Just like many games used to, parts and power is keyed to how great you are at the mp through levels and ranks and we?ve seen it before in other games, it usually doesn?t work very well.

Then you have the deathmatch, team deathmatch and domination, ctf variants. It?s a bit of fun but it?s like the starter for the actual meal, it?s not very filling.

That said we?re now onto the main attraction, the game itself. What you have here is an odd little cucumber, gone is the turn based strategy of the former game series, replaced by an in mech (Wanzer ? aka walking tank) and some out of mech sequences. Let me say right now, the mech combat is fun but the on-foot stuff is tedious and very annoying at times. The balance is crazy since the mech stuff has you blowing the heck out of other mechs and so on, with ease and the foot shooting does the same. You feel like many of the enemies are made out of Paper Mache or cardboard, they are put down way too easy.

The difficulty curve isn?t too bad, or at least that?s what I found when I played but I?m pretty good at third person shooters in general. There are no real issues with the controls apart from the fact that your weapons are mounted to the triggers and shoulder buttons, so you have this crab-claw grip when unleashing a full arsenal. Everything else is mapped how you expect it to be and basically works decently enough.

The boss battles are basically against powered up versions of normal mechs. These fights are hard and thankfully just as in the normal fights; you get respawning health packs that bring you back into the fracas. Even if you get crippled and damaged mech parts they bring you to full working condition quickly. It?s very arcade and for action fans it is excellent, for fans of Front Mission? Not so much.

There?s the obligatory high power, slow motion bullet time power up you can trigger to give you an edge in battles, and again it seems to just have been thrown in because it looks cool. Talking of cool though, it has a massive customisation option that is basically rpg in its depth...it?s full of options and things to tweak, weapons and even the look of the Wanzer can all be altered.

There are some presets and there?s power/weight to keep an eye on, however it?s excellent to play with and you can have a lot of fun. In fact some missions in the single player require you to equip certain parts to accomplish a goal: like hover parts to cross bodies of water for example.

So the gameplay bottom line is fun enough, but not fantastic.

How does the game fare...Graphically: Well, it looks ok in terms of the Wanzers and the basic environments and falls down badly when you look at the character skins, facial animations and all of the on-foot models. Graphics are decent enough overall and trimmed down in multiplayer to speed things up. Eyecandy (which is a favourite word here it seems) has enough whizz bang for your coin but still doesn?t quite measure up. The weapon effects are good though, including the great rocket pods which never get tiresome.

Story: I?m not going to say much about it. It?s clich?d and sadly very cheesy, what really lets it down is the terrible writing that comes right out a B-grade science fiction movie. At times I really felt that the cast of MST3K could be sitting there right with me and making comments through the whole of the game.

Then you move onto the delivery and voice acting, which complements the cheesy dialogue perfectly ? which is a bad thing if you?re looking for a solid story and good voice acting.

Sound and music are decent enough and that?s all I can really say about that side of the game.

Overall then, it?s a decent enough game with some balance issues and terrible story/voice work. If you want lots of action and the feeling that you?re piloting a mech-o-death, come play for a while but you probably won?t want to stay for the multiplayer ? you?ve seen it all before in some other game and the maps are limited to a small number, there?s very little to keep you coming back all round.

Fallout: New Vegas Review

The Final Word If you loved Fallout 3 and you want more, well New Vegas is right up there. If you didn?t like Fallout 3, give New Vegas a chance since it is a better game and a lot more fun.New Fallout, New Vegas

So here we are at long last, Bethesda has finally released the long-awaited next Fallout game in this post-apocalyptic franchise. Handing the reins to Obsidian was a very big gamble since the reception for their last game; Alpha Protocol was lukewarm at best. Has Obsidian redeemed themselves then ? the short answer is yes, the long answer is a bit more complicated. There are bugs and glitches that are prevalent in the engine still even with a patch.

Story

Fallout New Vegas takes place in a new area of the Wasteland and right away it kicks off to an interesting start. Captured, nearly murdered, your character wakes with no idea of who he is or why he?s out there. Slowly they piece together information and set off to find answers. I don?t want to spoil the story, but I actually prefer this one to Fallout 3 in terms of both narrative pace and style.

Gameplay

If you?ve played Fallout 3 then you?re going to be right at home with the mix of old features, like VATS and new features like the Companion Wheel, Workbenches, Reloading Benches, campfires and weapon mods. The former give you a way to break down certain items and make new ones, along with new weapon upgrades and so on, whilst the latter allow you to mix poultices, powders and other effective medicines. Weapon mods do just that; modify your weapon in some way. I found a sweet night ops scope for my Varmint Rifle, turning it into a credible sniper weapon for example.

You can play the game as a first or third person tactical shooter via VATS or as a straight out shooter. VATS if you don?t know what that is, well, it?s a fancy name for a pause activated RPG based system that lets you shoot at a target?s limbs or body parts, working out if you can hit based on a variety of hidden dice rolls and so on. You get bonuses and penalties just like in a tabletop RPG allowing for distance, line of sight and even type of weapon.

You can spend VATS Action Points to mark target locations, multi-targets and once you?re done, let the game work it all out. You can get some sweet kills this way and you?re often rewarded with a cut-scene animation of your attack even if it hits or misses.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are basically hybrid shooter/RPGs and they do a good job at mixing both. You have the SPECIAL stats, which stand for Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck. You have a number of points you pop into these as you generate your character, done here in a very nifty way indeed that?s part of the story I won?t spoil. You have the same deal with some skills and you can tag three of them to be your specialist skills, ones that get boosted by a large amount at chargen.

You also have various Perks, here in New Vegas you get to choose 2 interesting character Perks at the beginning that you won?t see again, so pick wisely. Once you earn enough XP from doing quests and killing things, you?ll level up and you can assign skill points and every other level, you can assign a Perk...these are just as fun as Fallout 3?s Perks and many of them have returned, along with some new ones that are pretty cool.

You have a variety of shops and services, where you can barter and pay for goods. Of course things like weapons and armour degrade over time and use, so you best be able to pay for repair or do it yourself. Or you might find that your gun breaks at a most annoying time, like right as you get swarmed by angry Gekos out for blood. The key to the game is effective management of your resources and of course, exploration. You?re not tied down to the core story; you can take on side quests and explore the whole of the massive Wasteland to your heart?s content.

I endorse this particular pastime since you can find some very cool loot indeed hiding away out there.

You?ll be able to find companions later on; you can control them through the new Companion Wheel, an interface that makes ordering them a lot better this time. You can tell them to use healing items or attack enemies, hold fire or hang back and so on plus more commands. It?s a good feature and well implemented. There?s the usual dialogue system back from Fallout 3 and it has a few tweaks, some extra options become available when you have the right perks and you won?t be able to succeed unless you have the correct skill and number in the brackets.

So if you see something with Speech 25, you need that in your skill before you can even have a hope in hell of making it.

Apart from these new mechanics it is pretty much the same game as Fallout 3, only a lot better in terms of game mechanics and systems ? fast travel is back, so is sleeping to regain health or pass time.

Lastly since it?s such a mammoth game and there?s way too much to detail, some of it would spoil the story too, there?s Hardcore Mode a new mode where ammo has weight, you need to sleep, eat and drink and healing items only restore health over time. Basically it?s a layer of extra realism on top of the already grungy, post-apocalyptic cake. Hardcore Mode is a fantastic new addition to the game and there?s a reward for anyone who plays the whole of NV from start to end with the mode active.
